Why Migrate Data?

Data migration transfers your data from earlier releases of Tally.ERP 9 to Release 5.0.

When you migrate data, you can:

  • Access data from any previous version by simply opening the company in Release 5.0.

  • Get started with the existing data without having to recreate.

  • Use all the features of the latest release with the data entered in the previous version.

Note: You can move your data back to the previous version of the application you were using after opening it in Tally.ERP 9 release 5.0. See Rolling Back Data to Your Previous Release.

How to Migrate Data?

Recommendations

To migrate data to Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0:

  • Create a backup of the data before migrating.

  • Close or shut the company being migrated in all instances of the application.

Note: After migrating data, changes like creating, modifying or deleting transactions, masters or reports in Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0 may cause potential data loss during rollback.

To migrate data

  1. Install Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0.

  2. Go to Gateway of Tally > F:1 Select Cmp.

  3. In the Select Company screen, provide the location of the company data you want to migrate. Select the company name from the List of Companies.

  4. Press Enter after selecting the company.

  1. Select Yes for the prompt Migrate? Yes or No, to proceed with data migration.

  1. Select Yes for the prompt Backup before migrating? to back up your data before migrating.

Note: When you migrate data from Tally.ERP 9 Release 4.9x, you have to first import the Payroll Statutory masters by pressing Ctrl + Alt + I on Gateway of Tally. This will import the latest Income Tax statutory masters to your company.

You cannot rollback the Payroll Statutory masters after migration.

Multi-User Environment

The following are the recommendations to migrate data in a multi-user environment. Ensure that:

  • The users close all previous versions of the application.

  • A backup of the data is created before migrating.

Following are two scenarios and their results for user A and B in a multi-user environment, during data migration:

Scenario

Result

User A closes company in previous version and then migrates to Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0.

User B closes company in previous version, and then opens company in Tally.ERP 9 release 5.0.

Both users A and B can access the company in Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0 and cannot reopen it in the previous version of the application.

User A closes company in previous version, and then migrates to Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0.

User B has company opened in previous version.

User A can access company in Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0 and cannot open it back in the previous release.

User B can continue accessing data in the previous version. However, working in the previous version will not be possible, if:

  • The company is closed in the previous version.

  • Any report that has been modified during migration is opened.

These two actions can lead to potential crash of the application.

Note: Any data change made by User B, after User A has moved to Release 5.0 will not get migrated. To migrate this data, Forced Migration is required.

Forced Migration

In a multi-user environment, if any user has not moved to Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0, data changed by that user will need to be migrated by force.

To force migrate

  1. Open company in Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0.

  2. Press  Ctrl + Alt + M.

  3. Select the modules you want to migrate from the List of Modules.

  4. Press Enter to accept.

  5. A confirmation message Backup before migrating? Yes or No appears. Select Yes to create a backup.

After backup creation, the data is forced migrated.
