This page has the list of FAQs on Tally Virtual User (TVU), categorised as Policy and Process, Licensing & Technology, Commercials, and Data Security.

Policy and Processes

We have introduced change in our licensing policy which will support virtual usage of TallyPrime via Tally Virtual User (TVU) pack. Virtual usage means accessing TallyPrime over RDP, Cloud, Citrix, or any other similar technologies.

Businesses that have an existing environment that allows accessing applications remotely can benefit. A few examples of Desktop Virtualisation tools are Windows RDP, Citrix, and Windows Thin Client.

  1. Customer gets comfort in the form of defined guidelines from TSPL to use Tally through RDP or similar technologies.
  2. Customer can choose the best method for TVU usage of TallyPrime, on the basis of the experience of operation in these environments.
  3. Customer gets support from Tally Partner and TallyCare on configuring and troubleshooting such environments.
  4. Multi-location organisations can operate a single license instead of needing to procure one for each branch. Depending on the situation Tally Partners can recommend the best option.
  5. TallyPrime can always remain open since it is installed on a server. Therefore, users can access TallyPrime round the clock.

TallyPrime is extensively used in standalone PCs or on multiple PCs in a LAN environment. We have noticed that a few of our customers and Partners have deployed or intent to deploy TallyPrime on cloud and other virtualised environments (Windows RDP, Windows thin Client, Citrix, or similar technologies) for various reasons. Given the diverse needs of our customers and Partners, and in good faith, TSPL does not intend to apply any direct restriction to host TallyPrime on such virtual environments. While TSPL does not intend to restrict hosting of TallyPrime usage in virtual environments, we advise our Partners and customers to follow certain well-defined guidelines to use TallyPrime Gold license in a virtualised environment. Hence, this is not an announcement of an added capability in TallyPrime but a step towards ensuring continuity of usage, and preventing possible misuse or abuse of TallyPrime License on the cloud.

Yes, the customer will be able to use Tally concurrently via server (configured for virtual setup) and virtual network in case of Silver license provided the RDP tool gives the same machine name in request.

Yes, LAN users (not using any virtual technology) do not fall under the purview of TVU. So 10 users can run one instance in a virtual environment. Please note, if anyone user loads 10 instances via his single login, all the 10 TVU packs will be consumed and other 9 users will not be able to load a Tally instance with a license. It will get opened in an “Educational Version” by giving the user a notification saying that “Maximum Tally Virtual User (TVU) limit exceeded. Close one or more TallyPrime instance accessed using TVU and try again.”

Customer can purchase TVU packs from TSPL by placing an order from his control centre. However, it is strongly recommended that all such cases undergo a thorough engagement by a competent Tally Partner.

Tally.NET Remote Access Capability and Tally Reports on Brower are not part of TVU pack, and these services continue to be part of TSS.

In such cases, the TallyPrime license used on the virtual environment will turn into Education Mode and a message will be displayed indicating that the TVU pack has reached the limit.

  1. Users working on the computers within a LAN are not under the purview of TVU.
  2. Any virtual technology used within/outside LAN will fall under the purview of TVU.

No, a TallyPrime Gold license is for a company. An association is not a company.

Companies largely provide access to a TallyPrime licence via RDP. This is not a violation of the license if the users are of the same company. But if users are of different companies, it is a violation. Every company needs to purchase TallyPrime license and TVU pack on a per-user basis to continue giving such services.

No. Currently, no such discounts are applicable.

Yes. During the trial period, you can ask for as many TVU packs as required for your operations.

The trial has to be utilised in one go, and cannot be broken into different intervals.

Tally.ERP 9 Release 5.0 and later.

Yes, TSPL will consider that as TVU pack. You will need to transition to TVU pack, and a Tally Partner or TallyCare will guide you.

TallyPrime license version will be considered as the base product, and hence the TVU pack will need to be configured accordingly. Since it is an Indian license, it will have India TVU pack irrespective of the country it is getting operated from.

No, TVU pack is not required as VPN is an extension of LAN and no virtualised technology (RDP) is used to access TallyPrime license.

Yes, TVU pack is required as virtualised technology (RDP) is used to access TallyPrime license.

TVU and Remote Access are different from a data access perspective. Using Remote Access, multiple users get access to a single data set. When using TVU pack for RDP access, multiple users can access the same licence and multiple data sets.

Also, Remote Access comes with default entitlements and is part of the TSS package. You need an Educational version of TallyPrime on the local computer.

When using TVU pack, you can use any third-party tool to access your TallyPrime in a virtualised environment.

Yes, TVU pack is specific to a TallyPrime license Serial Number.

For an optimal experience, we recommend a connection with a minimum speed of 512 Kbps.

All customisation will continue to work as earlier, irrespective of the deployment style.

Usage of TVU pack will be with virtualised systems. The configurations depend on the volume of data and other parameters.

Tally.Server 9 licenses are entitled to get 20 TVU packs for free.

It is not possible to host Tally data and TallyPrime license in a separate virtual machine.

No, there is no plan to charge for using multiple companies in a single user license.

TVU pack price includes only the license cost. Infrastructure & deployment costs are not included, and these depend on the type of deployment and infrastructure you choose.

TVU is a licensing statement and does not impact the TDL customisations. However, it is good to check with your TDL customisation partner on the validity of the TDLs in virtualised deployments (such as Windows Thin Client, RDP, Citrix, cloud, etc.) that you choose.

TVU pack is not a service. Tally Virtual User (TVU) pack is an instance of accessing TallyPrime over a virtualised environment through tools like Windows RDP, Windows thin Client, Citrix, or similar technologies.

Data security is not limited to that of TallyPrime data. There are three separate agents responsible for data security. One agent is the owner of the business, and how he configures IT systems for the company. Second is TallyPrime and the security features built-in. And third is the virtual environment provider and the levels of security built-in.

An important point to note here is that a multiuser (MU) installation with remote connections will require good IT administration skills, including knowledge of firewalls, security protocols, data encryption, and so on, from the side of the implementation partner.
