Tally Virtual User (TVU) – FAQ
This page has the list of FAQ on Tally Virtual User (TVU), categorised as Policy and Process, Licensing & Technology, Commercials, and Data Security.
Policy and Processes
We have introduced change in our licensing policy which will support virtual usage of TallyPrime via Tally Virtual User (TVU) pack. Virtual usage means accessing TallyPrime over RDP, Cloud, Citrix, or any other similar technologies.
Businesses that have an existing environment that allows accessing applications remotely can benefit. A few examples of Desktop Virtualisation tools are Windows RDP, Citrix, and Windows Thin Client.
- Customer gets comfort in the form of defined guidelines from TSPL to use Tally through RDP or similar technologies.
- Customer can choose the best method for TVU usage of TallyPrime, on the basis of the experience of operation in these environments.
- Customer gets support from Tally Partner and TallyCare on configuring and troubleshooting such environments.
- Multi-location organisations can operate a single license instead of needing to procure one for each branch. Depending on the situation Tally Partners can recommend the best option.
- TallyPrime can always remain open since it is installed on a server. Therefore, users can access TallyPrime round the clock.
TallyPrime is extensively used in standalone PCs or on multiple PCs in a LAN environment. We have noticed that a few of our customers and Partners have deployed or intent to deploy TallyPrime on cloud and other virtualised environments (Windows RDP, Windows thin Client, Citrix, or similar technologies) for various reasons. Given the diverse needs of our customers and Partners, and in good faith, TSPL does not intend to apply any direct restriction to host TallyPrime on such virtual environments. While TSPL does not intend to restrict hosting of TallyPrime usage in virtual environments, we advise our Partners and customers to follow certain well-defined guidelines to use TallyPrime Gold license in a virtualised environment. Hence, this is not an announcement of an added capability in TallyPrime but a step towards ensuring continuity of usage, and preventing possible misuse or abuse of TallyPrime License on the cloud.
Customer is using a Silver license with which he is entitled to get 1 TVU Pack free. If the Accountant is using Tally at his office, can the owner simultaneously be able to use Tally on a virtual network (similar to Tally's Remote Access capability)?
Yes, the customer will be able to use Tally concurrently via server (configured for virtual setup) and virtual network in case of Silver license provided the RDP tool gives the same machine name in request.
Customer is using a Gold license for which they are entitled to get 10 TVU Packs. Now if there are 10 users who are working on Server via LAN and there are 10 users who are accessing Tally via a virtual environment, will it allow?
Yes, LAN users (not using any virtual technology) do not fall under the purview of TVU. So 10 users can run one instance in a virtual environment. Please note, if anyone user loads 10 instances via his single login, all the 10 TVU packs will be consumed and other 9 users will not be able to load a Tally instance with a license. It will get opened in an "Educational Version" by giving the user a notification saying that "Maximum Tally Virtual User (TVU) limit exceeded. Close one or more TallyPrime instance accessed using TVU and try again."
Customer can purchase TVU packs from TSPL by placing an order from his control centre. However, it is strongly recommended that all such cases undergo a thorough engagement by a competent Tally Partner.
Tally.NET Remote Access Capability and Tally Reports on Brower are not part of TVU pack, and these services continue to be part of TSS.
If the customer does not purchase the TVU pack for the TVU users who are over and above the default entitlement and tries to access TallyPrime data and license in a virtual environment as he did in the past, what will be the experience?
In such cases, the TallyPrime license used on the virtual environment will turn into Education Mode and a message will be displayed indicating that the TVU pack has reached the limit.
- Users working on the computers within a LAN are not under the purview of TVU.
- Any virtual technology used within/outside LAN will fall under the purview of TVU.
1/10/20 TVU packs will be available to the customers by default against Silver, Gold and TS9 license respectively, free of cost for the lifetime of the TE9 license. Additional TVU packs in case of Gold and TS9 licenses beyond default entitlement can be purchased @ India (Rs.100/- per user per month plus taxes) Outside India (SAARC - $6 per user per month plus taxes, Other International Regions- $7.5 per user per month plus taxes) billed annually.

TSS is applicable for the TallyPrime license and this is to avail Tally.NET services and the latest updates to the product. The TVU pack fee is for using TallyPrime in a virtual environment and is annual.
As you have a single user license, you will get one TVU pack for free. For additional TVU packs, you need to convert the Silver license to Gold license.
No, a TallyPrime Gold license is for a company. An association is not a company.
Companies largely provide access to a TallyPrime licence via RDP. This is not a violation of the license if the users are of the same company. But if users are of different companies, it is a violation. Every company needs to purchase TallyPrime license and TVU pack on a per-user basis to continue giving such services.
No. Currently, no such discounts are applicable.

TVU packs will be billed annually based on the first purchase, and any additional mid-term procurement will be charged pro-rata. For any subsequent purchases in the year, the validity of the TVU pack will remain the same as the validity of the first TVU pack.
The validity of the first TVU pack will be for 12 months, excluding the month of purchase. For example, if a TVU pack is purchased in May 2020, its validity will be till 31 May 2021. If an additional TVU pack is purchased on 1 July 2020, its validity will be till 31 May 2021, and the customer will be charged pro-rata for 11 months.

The trial has to be utilised in one go, and cannot be broken into different intervals.

In this case, while Tally Care is helping customer in moving the Serial 2 to a different account, system will show the message that there are free TVU’s linked with the serial and the same will be moved back to Tally.Server 9. The Tally Care team will then reach out to the KAM to get an approval for this and once the approval is given, the serial is transferred to the different account and the 20 TVU’s moves back to Tally.Server 9.

TVU and Remote Access are different from a data access perspective. Using Remote Access, multiple users get access to a single data set. When using TVU pack for RDP access, multiple users can access the same licence and multiple data sets.

For an optimal experience, we recommend a connection with a minimum speed of 512 Kbps.

Data security is not limited to that of TallyPrime data. There are three separate agents responsible for data security. One agent is the owner of the business, and how he configures IT systems for the company. Second is TallyPrime and the security features built-in. And third is the virtual environment provider and the levels of security built-in.
An important point to note here is that a multiuser (MU) installation with remote connections will require good IT administration skills, including knowledge of firewalls, security protocols, data encryption, and so on, from the side of the implementation partner.
