How to account Personal Ledger Account (duty paid to government) opening Balance in books of accounts from Release 5 onwards?

Personal Ledger Account (PLA) is an account through which an assessee discharges the duty liability to the government.

In case of companies which have paid excess excise duty to the government, those will have closing balance of PLA. To account Opening Balance of PLA in case:

1        The Users are moving from manual accounting to Tally.ERP 9

2        The Excise for Manufacturer data is split: In Tally.ERP 9 after splitting the Excise for Manufacturer data, the PLA closing balance will not be carried forward to the newly created child company.

The PLA opening balance entry can be recorded on any day of the Financial Year (Ideally it should be recorded on the 1st of April or 1st of any month).

For example, ABC Company has opening PLA Balance of Rs. 12500 paid in advance. Basic Excise Duty of Rs. 12500.

To account for PLA Opening Balance

1.    Go to Gateway of Tally > Inventory Info. > Statutory info > Excise Opening Balance > PLA Opening Balance.

2.    Enter the Date on which the Excise Opening Balance is accounted. E.g.1-4-2016.

3.    In Excise Unit field select the Excise Unit for which the Excise Opening balance entry is recorded. e.g. ABC Company

Note: As Tally.ERP 9 allows to maintain accounts of Multiple Excise Units in a Single Company, Excise Unit field is provided to select the appropriate excise unit in PLA Opening Balance Journal Voucher.

4.    To account opening balance of Basic Excise Duty, under Particulars select Basic Excise Duty @ 12.5%.

Note: While accounting PLA Opening Balance, in List of Ledger's only the Excise Type of ledgers will be displayed for selection.

5.    Amount: In this field enter the advance duty amount paid to the department. The completed PLA Opening BalanceJournal Voucher is displayed as shown below.

6.    Press Enter to save. The PLA Opening Balance entry will be displayed in Gateway of Tally > Display > Statutory Reports > Excise Reports > Manufacturer > Excise Forms > Form ER 1.
